Still working in Houston, or trying to, I set up to paint the Sam Houston Memorial on a smaller size.  The sky hazed in and the wind picked up.  I couldn't handle my pastels, it was so cold and windy (after a promising sunrise).  So not to be daunted I took many, many photos and using my plein air painting of the Sam Houston Memorial from last year, I headed to my studio.

Studio pastel painting 11" x 14" Hermann Park

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

In late November I took my pastels and headed south to Houston to plein air paint.  Well, November is winter in Houston too and it was chilly and cloudy and did I mention very, very windy!  Boy was I disappointed. But always with camera in hand (if the pastel can't be there), I was scouting for interesting sites. Here I am back in the studio working in the huge Hermann Park which boasts a number of statues, architectural structures and the famous Japanese gardens.  I did get to paint in Hermann Park last year, so that experience certainly aided my ability to work in the studio this time around.

This work is created with: Nupastel, Rembrandt, Richeson, Sennelier and Great American pastel.

This work is created on: Pastel Premier pastel paper.

River Poetry at Crouch Creek en plein air pastel painting 11" x 14"

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

Painting en plein air at the Dahlem Farm, I love to return to the sweet little Crouch creek that snakes it way through the Dahlem Conservancy property.  My history with this site goes back to the 1990's when I taught a class for Jackson College (then Jackson Community College) on landscape painting.  Boy have I come full circle, now I view myself as a student of the landscape, returning year after year to paint this idyllic site. Here I seek to capture the ambience of the spring patterns and colors.  In this series of work, I visit before the trees have leafed out and the grasses still have not taken on the vibrant greens of summer. It is peaceful here working and observing the nuances that this site presents.

I am honored to have this work included in the Great Lakes Pastel Society 2019 Members Exhibit at the Carnegie Center for the Arts.  Located at 107 N. Main, Three Rivers, MI.  Opening reception June 21, 5:30 - 7:30. The juror, nationally and internationally reputed Alan Larkin writes in his Juror's statement:

"Artists enter these shows expecting to measure themselves according to tough standards. If the shows are small, then mere acceptance constitutes a highly sought-after honor." Fifty-three works make up the exhibition.

En plein air pastel painting 11" x 14"

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

This centennial farm is one of the three farms that make up the working dairy farm that I previously posted of the cows. (Curiosity). Here I am working along one of the several farm lanes that connect the three sites.  This day the weather was faultless-sunny and warm and steeped in a tangible tranquility.

I am honored to have this pastel painting "Barn Poetry XXXIV" selected as part of the prestigious 15th Annual Mile High National Pastel Exhibition by internationally and nationally renown juror, Barbara Jaenicke. The exhibition runs May 11 to June 29, 2019 at the Curtis Center for the Arts 2349 E. Orchard Rd. Centennial, CO. I hope if you are visiting the Denver metropolitan area you will take in the exhibit.

Barn Poetry - Curiosity

Studio oil painting 12" x 16"

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar art work.

Last summer a fellow artist and I went to a working dairy farm to paint.  The family extended an invitation to paint there any day.  We took them up on their gracious offer, working on and off there the entire summer. While working en plein air I consistently chose to paint the wheat bales and the barn structures as my main theme. But one day as I was heading home for lunch the cows couldn't contain their curiosity and followed my progress as I drove along the farm lane.  I took a few photos never intending to paint them. Early this past winter, (via these photos in my studio) I returned to this special farm and composed this painting.

This artwork is created with: Windsor Newton, Sennelier and Weber Permalba oil.

This artwork is created on: Arches mounted oil paper
